Welcome to Harlech

A guide for visitors arriving by train.

Routes to the Castle

The Steepest Street

Feel the Burn!
This shorter, quicker route to the castle has minimal traffic but previously held the record as the "World's Steepest Street" for good reason. Your thighs won't thank you, but you'll reach the castle in the shortest time. Look out for a couple of benches on the ascent offering stunning views of Snowdonia – perfect for catching your breath!

Directions: Facing the castle (your back to the station) turn left out of the station platform. Take the first right (Ffordd Pen Llech) and follow the road up the hill until you see the children's playground on your right. Take the path to your right, underneath the castle bridge and round to the left to arrive in the castle car park. Note: The road is one-way (top to bottom) for vehicles so, although it's a quiet road, be aware of potential oncoming traffic.

10-15 minutes 0.25 miles
The Slow Switchback

More curves than a Curly Wurly!
If you want a slow meander up to the castle, this is for you. It's a longer overall distance but less steep than Ffordd Pen Llech. The road zig-zags up the hill and note that this road can get busy with vehicles travelling in both directions and no pavements on either side.

Directions: Facing the castle (your back to the station), turn right and follow the road (past the castle steps that are no longer an entrance option) until you see the cafe/hairdressers on your left. Take the road on the left which ascends up the hill where you will arrive at the entrance to the castle car park.

20-30 minutes 0.5 miles

Please note: Neither of these routes are suitable for people with mobility or fitness challenges. There are a couple of taxis in the area that could be contacted for assistance, but they cannot be guaranteed to be available.

Seaside Serenity

Soft sand, soothing sounds!
For a complete change of pace, Harlech's beautiful beach offers soft golden sand and calming waves. Perfect for relaxation, beachcombing, or simply enjoying the peaceful coastal atmosphere. Much easier on the legs than castle climbing!

Directions: With your back to the castle, walk out of the railway station car park and take a left past the Queens Hotel. Cross the road and walk straight down Beach Road (shop will be on your left). At the end of the road, walk through the gates, there is a slight uphill to get over the sand dunes but it's worth the effort for the stunning beach beyond.

Important note: There is a solid path up to the top of the hill but beyond that, there is only very soft sand not suitable for wheelchairs or buggies.

Royal St David's Golf Course

Championship links golf!
Experience one of Wales' premier golf courses with stunning views of Harlech Castle and Snowdonia. Royal St David's offers a challenging links course set against dramatic coastal scenery. The course welcomes visitors and green fees can be arranged at the clubhouse.

Directions: Face away from the castle and walk out of the railway station car park onto the main road. Take a left and walk along the road for 0.3 miles. The golf course car park and entrance will appear on the right.
